Yes, my dogs often eat better than I, but they haven’t always.  They used to eat the same dry kibble every day.  Once I thought about it…  thinking… thinking…. what if I ate dry cereal, every day.  How healthy would I be????  Grace is our 1 year old cavalier and Max our 6 year old Papillon, both wonderful dogs that I would rather not take to the vet for health issues because they didn’t get the right nutrition!

So I’ve done some research starting about a year ago.

This is what I’ve found.  Dogs in the wild ate raw meat, fruits, veges, herbs, seeds etc.  In many countries dogs are fed scraps (now remember most countries eat healthier than the U.S.A. so these are healthier than salt, fat, sugar and chemical laden processed foods most of us eat).  When they eat veges, fruits, raw meat etc… they have less health problems.  Hard not to say Duh!

This is what I’ve tried – Ani Phyo’s recipe for raw vegan dog food (Gracie loves, Max eats some but in protest, he takes after Bill, both big meat eaters haha).  Her recipe is a mix of raw nuts, veggies, fruits, olive oil and a little garlic.

Caution!!!!!!  Many foods are toxic to dogs.  And if you think dogs won’t eat things that are toxic to them… stop thinking.  Anti-freeze is deadly in any amount (Not sure the exact amount but I think a lick off the garage floor could be detrimental) and dogs love it and die.  😦  So here are some, NOT ALL of foods that are toxic to dogs.

  • Raisins – a few could kill
  • Grapes – a few could cause kidney failure
  • Alcohol
  • Chocolate
  • Onions
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Coffee, tea (caffeine)
  • Broccoli in large quantities
  • Mushrooms
  • Dough with yeast
  • Apple seeds, cherry pits, peach pits, and plum pits contain the toxin cyanide.
  • Avocados especially pits and shell.
  • And many more
